Brief:

This young professional couple with four children approached us for complete renovation of their large rear garden in Clapham following extensive internal refurbishment.

Challenges:

To include entertaining elements adjoining the kitchen extension whilst including areas for kids play.

Design Response:

This wonderful and unique back of house renovation, meant that our clients now looked onto their exterior space 24/7 and their existing traditional formal garden was not in keeping with their lifestyle.

A young and active family, with 3 children all under the age of 7, required a large open. child friendly entertaining space.

They wanted areas for seating and socialising for family and friends gatherings.

They liked the idea of combining lounging and dining as well as integrating children’s play equipment as well as a BBQ and cooking area.

The views form the house had become hugely important and the refurbished interior was to play a large part in the design choices for the exterior.

Grey wood effect tiles and minimal modern kitchen and relaxed lounge area directly linked to the garden and the styling of the exterior followed suit.

The levels of the interior meant a drop down into the garden and our first job was to create a low maintenance composite deck in a complimentary material extending at internal floor level.

Additionally, fences were in disrepair and upgrade of these boundaries with feature tongue and groove and painted trellis panels. formed the new boundaries.

“Just wanted to say thank you for turning our garden into an Aston Martin. The whole process from design, build to finish has been smooth and efficient. Highly recommend”

The next step was to design the entertaining and seating areas. The position of this was for west facing late sun, away from passing pedestrians and cars on the roadside.

Two areas were devised, one for lounging and one for upright seating and these combined with raised planters and porcelain patio.

The seating position and style was chosen to allow movement and flow between the areas.

We created this designated entertaining space using strong geometric shapes, repeated materials and a colour palette picked up from the interior.

Beyond this area, hidden by up-lit Olive trees, was a bespoke Tree house and climbing frame and along with the large artificial lawn and swing from the existing mature apple tree, we provided the young children ample opportunity to let off steam.

We kept our other features around the perimeter of the garden, leaving a large central lawn and strategically positioned our built in BBQ , two smaller seating spots and cushion storage.

For cohesion and style, we tied everything together with a simple palette of colours and materials. One deck, one paving, one paint choice creating a simple harmonious feel.

The garden comes into its own at night, with ground, up, wall and fairy lights all connected to the internal zonal light system.
